A Defense of the Press

My kids asked me recently what I wanted to be when I was growing up. I told them I always had three passions: history, politics, and telling stories.

The first two stayed with me, but storytelling manifested itself in myriad ways since I was young. I wanted to be a cartoonist, then a film director, and then — once I began working on the high school newspaper — a journalist.

That one stuck around for a while.
